In a shocking turn of events, a YouTuber has claimed to have been drugged and robbed while travelling on a train. With a fear of violence widespread among women in India, the incident has reignited the discussion about the safety of women in public spaces, especially at night. Kanika Devrani recently shared a video detailing her experience when she and her co-passengers faced the unfortunate incident.
Kanika alleged that she was on the Brahmaputra Mail when a stranger entered the compartment, whom she claimed might have stolen her belongings. In the video, Kanika revealed that she was travelling from Delhi to Assam on a 2AC ticket, believing it would be more secure. The train started its journey in the night and reached New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in West Bengal between 3 and 4 AM.
“I was sleeping at the time, and my phone was under my pillow. I also shielded my seat with the curtains, and the lights were turned off,” Kanika said in the video. She further shared that a stranger boarded the train from the station without any ticket and stole her mobile phone, and also that of another passenger beside her. Upon investigating it herself, she got to know from the warden that the man had inquired of the passengers about a few seat numbers before arriving at her seat and stealing her phone.
She also alleged that the man had sprayed something to make the passengers pass out. Later, Kanika’s mother had a conversation with someone claiming to be an RPF official, and he asked for the password.
The YouTuber expressed how she felt stressed and was panicking after understanding the situation. “I was scared of what could have happened to me. I had a spare phone with me, and I was able to contact my family,” she continued. While mentioning that she did not get much help from the Railway Police, Kanika went on to share how she has been trying to seek help from the Assam Police but in vain.
“Travel safe,” the YouTuber wrote in the caption. Throughout the video, she constantly raised the lack of security and safety in trains, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The video left social media users worried, with many asking the Indian Railways to look into the matter. One wrote, “Is it that easy that anyone can enter the 2S class without the ticket, even under the supervision of your employers? This is the safety you’re providing to your passengers, and especially to females? You must look into this matter and take action as quickly as possible.”
Another added, “You are safe, that’s more than enough. But this is a video we have to share with people who are travelling alone, also, or who are travelling by train, keep travel safe and stay alert.”
Meanwhile, a Northeast Frontier Railway official spoke to Hindustan Times and shared that the matter is being investigated and strong action will be taken.
