Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai, has launched a new robotic pancreatic surgery programme, aimed at improving the outcomes of patients undergoing complex pancreatic cancer surgeries. The programme’s launch was marked by the successful completion of robotic Whipple procedures (pancreaticoduodenectomy), which are considered to be among the most challenging surgeries in gastrointestinal oncology.
The surgeries were carried out by a team led by Venkat P., senior consultant, and Priya Kapoor, consultant surgical oncology. By utilising robot-assisted technology, the procedures were performed with precision, leading to quicker recovery times. Patients were discharged within four days with no significant post-operative complications.
“The robotic Whipple procedure requires technical expertise and advanced technology. The successful completion of the surgeries shows the potential of robotic platforms to make complex surgeries safer and lead to faster recovery for patients,” Dr. Venkat said.
Pancreatic cancer, which is often diagnosed in the later stages, remains a significant health concern in India, with rising incidence rates. Dr. Kapoor added: “Robotic surgery offers a minimally invasive approach that allows for quicker recovery, smaller incisions, and fewer complications, making it a valuable option for patients who may have previously been considered ineligible for surgery.”
