Karan Johar spills the tea on Bollywood’s WhatsApp groups, calling them “b**chy” and brutally honest.
Karan Johar talks about his WhatsApp groups.
Karan Johar has never shied away from telling it like it is, and this time, he’s taking us behind the digital curtain of Bollywood’s most buzzing WhatsApp groups. In a candid moment during a conversation with Barkha Dutt for Mojo Story, the filmmaker reacted to a fan’s cheeky suggestion: why not turn those WhatsApp chats into a movie or book?
His reaction was classic Karan. “If anyone ever got access to those WhatsApp groups about me and many of my friends in the fraternity, I think we would have to move to London. We may not be able to continue living in our city,” Karan said, sending the audience into laughter.
He explained that these chat groups are a no-filter zone where opinions fly freely — and often sharply. “Because let me tell you, they are very candid, honest, and sometimes very b**chy analysis of our immediate environment and what is going on. We are fashion critics, we are movie critics. We are critics of everything in that group. Everyone has an opinion, and none of us can ever put those opinions out there,” Karan added.
Known as Bollywood’s go-to insider, Karan often sits at the centre of the industry’s biggest social circles — which only makes his WhatsApp revelations juicier for fans who love their share of behind-the-scenes gossip.
In the meantime, Karan is commanding attention on-screen as the host of The Traitors on Amazon Prime Video. The intense reality show features 20 celebrities playing a game of trust and betrayal, and it’s gearing up for its grand finale on July 3. This season features a mix of names like Raj Kundra, Lakshmi Manchu, Sahil Salathia, Maheep Kapoor, Mukesh Chhabra, Raftaar, Elnaaz Norouzi, Uorfi Javed, and Jannat Zubair.
Karan Johar recently attended the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Homebound, a film produced under his banner, Dharma Productions. The movie, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in key roles.
