According to the Karnataka government’s report to the High Court, over 2.5 lakh people gathered near the M Chinnaswamy stadium on Wednesday, June 4, to be a part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru‘s (RCB) celebrations after they ended their 18-year wait for an elusive maiden title. Despite 1,380 personnel from Bengaluru City Police and 13 KSRP platoons (325 personnel) being deployed, a stampede occurred at multiple gates, causing 11 deaths and injuries to 56 people.
The casualties were reported at Gates 1, 6, 7, and Gates 17-21. Medical aid was promptly provided, with 50 of the injured treated as outpatients and six still undergoing treatment. Apart from police personnel, the state had also stationed three fire tenders, two ambulances, two D-SWAT units, one water tanker, one command and control vehicle, and four more KSRP units. Post-mortem examinations have been completed for all 11 fans who lost their lives during the horrific stampede. The bodies have been handed over to their families, the government said in its status report.
The government has announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh for each person who died during the stampede and is covering all medical expenses for the injured. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has also pledged an additional INR 5 lakh compensation per deceased. RCB will also hand over financial support worth INR 10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased. The franchise has also vowed to initiate a fund called ‘RCB Cares‘ to support the fans who sustained injuries during the stampede.
The Karnataka government informed that the investigation into the stampede has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). A Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be forged within the CID to ensure that the incident is investigated robustly.
In its status report submitted to the court, the government stated that an FIR has been registered under Crime No 123/2025 at Cubbon Park Police Station under sections 105, 125(1)(2), 132, 121/1, 190 read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The FIR has now been handed over to the CID with instructions to form an SIT for further investigation.
Legal case filed against RCB, KSCA and event organisers
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against RCB, the KSCA, DNA Networks, and others involved in organising the celebration, which saw the tragic stampede. The FIR, filed suo motu by the Cubbon Park Police, was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central, Shekar H Tekkannavar. The entities have been named as accused in a case of alleged criminal negligence related to the incident.
RCB’s title triumph has been significantly dampened by the recent turn of events, with former cricketers like Madan Lal questioning the need to have a celebration event right after their win on Tuesday.
