Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, has shared his honest thoughts on a question that often comes up in the film industry – what really matters more, good reviews or box office collections? As someone who has spent over three decades in the industry, both acting and producing films, Aamir has seen all sides of success and failure. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, he explained that while good reviews are always appreciated, it’s the box office that gives a clearer and more reliable picture of how a film has actually performed.
“Ultimately, it’s the box office that gives you a very definite yardstick,” Aamir told us and then added, “Reviews are subjective — some people like a film, some don’t. But the box office is unemotional. It clearly tells you how much a film has earned, and it’s a fairly accurate measure. Unless there’s a specific reason a film didn’t do well, box office performance reflects how much a film is loved.”
He continued, “For example, I believe Laapataa Ladies would have done really well in theatres if it hadn’t premiered on Netflix just eight weeks later. The word of mouth was so strong. According to me, if it hadn’t gone to Netflix so soon, it would have been a huge success.”
Aamir Khan is currently busy promoting his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par. In the same interview, when asked if he still feels excited or nervous before a film’s release, Aamir shared, “Yes, absolutely, I can’t sleep at night.”
“After so many years, yeah, it’s been there most of the time. Except for one film, Thugs of Hindostan. I wasn’t happy with that film, so there was no excitement or curiosity in me. I actually slept well for the first time after shooting it. While filming, you sometimes get a sense of how it’s going, but it can be wrong. The real feeling comes when you see the edit. When I saw the first cut of Thugs, I didn’t like it. But the makers liked it a lot.”
Sitaare Zameen Par is a sports comedy drama film directed by R. S. Prasanna, and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. A spiritual successor to Khan’s 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, it stars Khan and Genelia Deshmukh. It is a remake of the Spanish film Champions.
