Zeenat Aman clarified her bond with Raj Kapoor was professional, countering late Dev Anand’s claims in his autobiography. She plans to address this in her own memoir.
Zeenat Aman addresses relationship rumours with Raj Kapoor.
Zeenat Aman, 73, is a social media sensation. Her thoughtful and articulate take on love, life and Bollywood often becomes the talk of the town. The best part is how the veteran actor never minces her words and always speaks her mind. Recently, during an event, Zeenat Aman addressed Dev Anand’s controversial take on her “relationship” with Raj Kapoor. For the unversed, the Guide actor, in his autobiography, had openly confessed her love for Aman, alongside mentioning her rumoured affair with Raj Kapoor.
Zeenat Aman starred in Raj Kapoor-directed Satyam Shivam Sundaram in 1978, which changed her career. The incident Dev Anand referred to in his book, Romancing With Life, dates back to the time Aman had just been cast in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. It was no secret then that Dev Anand was deeply infatuated with his Hare Rama Hare Krishna co-star at the time.
Recalling the fateful party from where the rumours started, Zeenat expressed that this was her chance to clarify the events that unfolded. The Don actor shared at an ABP event, “Raj had signed me for Satyam Shivam Sundaram and I went there as his about-to-be heroine. I never had an inter-personal relationship (with him), not before that and never after that. It was always a director-actor relation (between us). He was passionate about his work and I was passionate about his work but never did he ask me why I did not wear white. In fact, if you look at it, I have never worn white on his sets or parties. Never has he said ‘why didn’t you wear white’? With all due respect, ek kahani banane me, hindsight se kuch interesting banane ke liye kuch jumle daal dete hain (sometimes, some phrases are added with the aim of making a narrative or a story interesting).”
She also added, “Now, I am not sure about the perspective of Dev sahab. Lekin mai haq se kehti hu bilkul galat tha, mai apni kitaab me zarur likhungi (I say this rightfully that it was wrong, I will write about this in my autobiography) . I admire and respect Dev Sahab, but this was not correct.”
What did Dev Anand write in his book about Zeenat Aman and Raj Kapoor?
In his memoir, Dev Anand recalled an evening when he had planned to confess his love to Zeenat Aman, shortly after making a brief appearance at a party. However, his plans took an unexpected turn when he witnessed a moment between Zeenat and Raj Kapoor. “A drunken Raj Kapoor… threw his arms around her exuberantly. This suddenly struck me as a little too familiar. And the way she reciprocated his embrace seemed much more than just polite and courteous,” he wrote.
Dev had arranged a private meeting with Zeenat to express his feelings and propose to her, having realised that he was “desperately in love with Zeenat.” The book further quoted Raj Kapoor, in a tipsy state, confronting Zeenat, saying, “You are breaking your promise that you will always be seen by me only in a white sari.” Dev observed that “more embarrassment was written large on her face,” adding, “Zeenat was not the same Zeenat for me any more. My heart broke into pieces… The rendezvous had already lost all meaning in my mind. I sneaked out of the place. The evening delivered a blow to my personality, and my dominating spirit.”
He went on to reveal that he had planned to pitch a new story to her – one that would “put her on a pedestal as never before, the highest so far.” But as he concluded, “that was never to be.”
