Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh is known as the city of locks for a reason. The locks made here are renowned across the country for their strength and quality. Among these, the No. 75 lock stands out as a symbol of durability and expert craftsmanship. Local lock trader Mohammad Khalid considers it the best and strongest of all. According to him, its strength and security are unmatched, making other locks pale in comparison.
But the No. 75 lock is more than just a piece of metal – it is a product of fine craftsmanship, shaped through a meticulous process involving 30 to 35 steps. This special lock is in high demand not only in Aligarh but also in other states across India.
The No. 75 lock represents hard work, tradition, and the very identity of Aligarh’s renowned lock industry. Khalid explains that this lock, measuring 75 mm, is considered the best in every aspect. It is fitted with 12 levers, which makes it highly secure. Even its key is stronger and more durable than keys of most other locks.
While Aligarh manufactures locks in different sizes such as No. 40 and No. 50, the No. 75 lock is the highest in terms of quality and strength. These numbers correspond to both size and strength, and the No. 75 lock is regarded as the strongest and most reliable in the market. It is commonly used for securing doors of homes, shops, flats, and shutters.
There is consistent demand for the No. 75 lock in the market. Khalid explains that making one of these locks involves several steps: from cutting the metal sheet, inlaying, and polishing, to bright finishing. Each lock passes through many hands and up to 35 individual processes before it is ready. Around 250 to 300 locks of this model are produced daily in Aligarh.
These locks are not only popular locally but are also supplied to other parts of India including Roorkee, Mumbai, and several regions in Gujarat. In terms of pricing, the lock leaves the factory at around Rs 65, and it is later sold in the market at prices ranging between Rs 100 and Rs 150 per piece.
