A bizarre incident during a virtual hearing in the Gujarat High Court has sparked widespread attention after a litigant was seen attending proceedings from his toilet. The episode took place on June 20 before the bench of Justice Nirjar S. Desai and was caught on video, which has since gone viral on social media.
The video begins with a close-up of a man identified as ‘Samad Battery’, wearing earphones around his neck. As he adjusts his phone, it becomes apparent that he is seated in a toilet. The footage then shows him cleaning himself before exiting the washroom. He briefly goes off-screen and later reappears in a different room.

According to High Court records, the defendant was involved in a criminal case and was seeking the quashing of an FIR. After hearing arguments from both sides, the High Court decided to quash the FIR.
The incident has sparked discussions about appropriate behaviour during virtual court proceedings. This is not the first instance of such misconduct.
In April, the Gujarat High Court fined a litigant Rs 50,000 for inappropriate behaviour during a video conference. Similarly, in March, a Delhi court summoned a litigant who was seen smoking while pleading his case via video link.
