As Friday marked Day 1 of the month of Sawan, Devotees in huge numbers throng Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain. A video shared online shows devotees standing in long queues. The move in the direction of the Jyotrilinga with folded hands.
Meanwhile, to mark the auspicious day, priests performed ‘Rudrabhishek’ at the temple. Milk, curd and honey were offered to Lord Shiva during the ‘rudrabhishek’, followed by the Vedic chants by the priests.

Sawan has a mythological significance in Hinduism. According to ancient scriptures, it is during this month that Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison Halahala, which emerged during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), thereby protecting the universe from its destructive power.
Temples will witness huge rush across the country from today. In Delhi, worshippers gathered at the historic Shree Gaurishankar Temple in Chandni Chowk. Similar scenes were observed at Sabli Mahadev Mandir in Hapur and the revered Mankameshwar Mahadev Temple in Prayagraj, where large crowds gathered to offer prayers and perform rituals with heartfelt devotion.
