Civic sense is what primarily involves how we behave in public and interact with others. It encompasses a wide range of behaviours, including speaking, driving, walking and respecting community areas. It is crucial in shaping how the world perceives a nation. A new video has once again ignited debate on social media about the citizens’ lack of civic sense after massive chaos erupted over free yoga mats at an event in Vizag.
What was expected to be a peaceful celebration of yoga and health devolved into an unexpected rush when chaotic scenes of people stealing yoga mats erupted from the International Yoga Day event hosted on June 21 at RK Beach in Visakhapatnam.
In a video shared on Instagram, a swarm of spectators are seen rushing towards stacks of yoga mats laid out for distribution after the event, creating a stampede-like situation. They snatched many mats and ran from the location while pushing others. Those who couldn’t get a mat tried to steal the food. Yes! You read that right.
This happened shortly after the yoga session concluded and when the volunteers were preparing to distribute the yoga mats to the people who arrived at the event.
As soon as the video was shared online, it re-ignited the debate on the citizens’ lack of civic sense. An Instagram user commented, “For India’s development, we need civic sense more than anything.”
Another one wrote, “No civic sense. Shame on these people. Needs to learn some basic discipline before yoga.” One of them wrote, “4th Largest Economy with lowest of the top 10 economies per capita and 0 civic sense.”
“Integrity down the toilet!,” a comment reads. A user quipped, “Yoga after effects.” A person shared, “No matter how much the government spends on developing Infrastructure, Schools, Colleges, Healthcare, Airports, Trains, etc. Nothing matters in front of basic civic sense.”
Interestingly, the Vizag Yoga event also achieved two Guinness World Records. The first one for the largest yoga session at a single place, with an amazing 302,000 (3.02 lakh) participants, and the second was the largest mass Surya Namaskar demonstration, with 22,122 tribal students participating on June 20, 2025.
