Bigg Boss 13 fame Shefali Jariwala’s sudden death has sent shockwaves. The actress was taken to Bellevue Multispecialty Hospital by her husband, Parag Tyagi, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Initial reports claimed that Shefali died of cardiac arrest. She was 42. Credited for numerous films and songs, Shefali became an overnight sensation after the release of her iconic song, Kaanta Laga, in 2002. Her undeniable beauty and peppy dance moves gained instant popularity among the youth, making her rise to stardom.
Kaanta Laga – A Massive Trend
Originally from the 1972 film Samadhi, Kaanta Laaga’s remix version was a chartbuster in 2002. Included in the DJ Doll album, it was a huge hit and had everyone hooked to Shefali Jariwala’s graceful dance moves. Her pop-star-like vibe and Pallavi Kelkar’s incredible vocal skills contributed to the song’s success, which ruled the trends chart for months. Having spent weeks in various top 10 charts, Kaanta Laga became one of the biggest songs of the year in Hindi. The success of the dance number not only revolutionised remixes but also paved the way for a cultural moment that defined a new era of Bollywood remixes with a focus on music videos.
In an interview with Her Zindagi, Shefali Jariwala earlier said, “I didn’t expect that it would be an overnight succes,s and my whole life changed. For me, it was like that.”
Shefali Jariwala’s Paycheque For Kaanta Laga
Shefali Jariwala was just an engineering student when she received the opportunity to feature in the song and decided to take the leap. In the interview, she shared, “I was in college then, and my parents told me to focus on my studies. But I wanted to do it because I was getting paid for it.”
As per the reports, Shefali was paid Rs 7,000 for Kaanta Laga, an amount huge enough for a college student seeking financial independence.
Given the chartbuster success of the 2002 remix of Kaanta Laga, the music composers and singers rolled out the new versions of the song. In 2004, DJ Doll released Kaanta Laga – Piya Come Close Mix as part of the Super Model Mix album.
Later, Neha Kakkar, Tony Kakkar and Yo Yo Honey Singh also collaborated for a party track with the same name. Released in 2021, the song was released under Anshul Garg’s label Desi Music Factory.

The early 2000s was the time when the Indian artists began experimenting with pop beats, dropping bangers that are still a fan-favourite. Apart from Kaanta Laga, songs like Chadti Jawani, Kaliyon Ka Chaman, Saiyan Dil Me Ana Re and Leja Leja Re ruled the trend charts, making music enthusiasts groove to its peppy tunes. Besides, Rakhi Sawant’s Pardesiya Yeh Sach Hai Piya remix also stole hearts, making it a timeless among fans.
