The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru’s civic body, has launched a unique initiative to feed stray dogs across the city with nutritious meals. The menu includes chicken rice, egg rice, and vegetables, served daily at 100 spots to around 4,000 stray dogs, especially in areas with fewer feeders and food shortages.
According to the Hindustan Times, the meals will contain 600 grams of cooked rice with chicken, vegetables, and turmeric, giving each dog at least 750 calories. Clean drinking water will also be provided. The goal is to reduce hunger-related aggression in dogs and lower the number of bite cases.
Animal lovers have praised the move, while social media users had a field day with jokes and memes.
A user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “There was a time when unscrupulous people cooked dogs and fed gullible people in Bengaluru. How times have changed! Now dogs will get to eat meat and eggs! Every dog has its day.”
Another joked, “Bengaluru dog relaxing in a Jacuzzi after having a tummy full of chicken rice and egg rice.”

A post read, “After watching the news of Bengaluru feeding stray dogs with Chicken & Rice daily, stray dogs from all over India are planning to shift to Bengaluru. No language problems for them!”
Someone else added, “Aren’t half the stray dogs from all of India already in Bengaluru?”
“Chicken and egg rice for Bengaluru stray dogs! So this explains why they were hanging around Vidhana Soudha! Their demands have been met!” a user remarked.

Reportedly, only FSSAI-registered food providers can apply to run the service. The contract lasts one year, with a possible extension, and bidding will be done online through the Karnataka Public Procurement Portal.
Each of the city’s eight zones has a budget of Rs 36 lakh for the program. Agencies can bid for multiple zones, depending on how many qualify.
Vendors must set up their kitchens, handle water and electricity costs, and provide clean drinking water at feeding spots. The meals must meet hygiene standards and will be cooked off-site, then delivered to specific locations in each zone.
