The man revealed Mumbai job will offer him perks like joining bonus.
In today’s competitive job market, it’s not uncommon for employees to switch jobs in pursuit of better pay. A Gurugram-based employee earning an annual salary of ₹9 lakh sparked a debate on social media after revealing he had received a lucrative offer from an early-stage startup in Mumbai. The new role offered a fixed salary of ₹16 lakh per annum, along with additional perks such as a joining bonus and equity.
Instead of jumping at the offer, the employee turned to Reddit, seeking advice from professionals on whether he should make the switch for the significant salary hike, and the responses were insightful. Describing himself as someone with a “pretty low-maintenance lifestyle,” he shared, “I have a cook who handles meals, and I do the cleaning myself.” However, he voiced concerns about the high cost of living in Mumbai, especially with the office located in the upscale Nariman Point area.
Although the offer seemed fascinating, he asked Reddit users if the salary would be sufficient to maintain a comparable standard of living in Mumbai. “How much of a lifestyle change should I anticipate after moving from Gurugram? If feasible, I’d like to avoid relying on Mumbai’s local trains and keep the car-like comfort and quick trip I currently enjoy,” he continued.
As soon as the post was shared online, it captured the viewer’s attention, prompting many to share their suggestions. The majority of which were against him switching his current job.
“No, Gurgaon is a good place for you to live; don’t be greedy and move to a city like Mumbai. It is a very fast-paced and busy city,” wrote a user. Another one wrote, “Don’t even think about it. Being from Delhi and having lived in Mumbai for 15 years, I would simply say don’t. Mumbai is a mess. Furthermore, given the numbers, the hike isn’t worth it.”
One of them shared, “If you enjoy chaos and find calm in it, consider visiting Mumbai; otherwise, I believe Gurgaon has all that Mumbai has while also being less expensive and slower-paced, which I enjoy.” A comment read, “The hike isn’t worth it because it’s practically the same amount, given how expensive the place is. You’ll simply settle for a lower standard of living for the same price.”
“Wouldn’t make sense at this pay; you’d receive the same in Gurgaon if you switched. Also, if you’re a fan of Delhi food, you’ll struggle in Mumbai,” suggested a user.
The cost of living in Mumbai is generally considered high, particularly when compared to other big Indian cities. It is often cited as one of the most expensive cities in India, particularly for accommodation.
