An Indian man’s heartfelt story about losing his job in Dubai and returning to India has gone viral. Shared on Reddit (now deleted), the post struck a chord with many for its raw honesty.
In his post, the man recounted how, after working tirelessly for five years, an unexpected meeting with HR turned his world upside down. He had to leave Dubai abruptly, and his candid reflection on the experience resonated deeply with readers.
“I don’t even know how to start typing this. My hands are shaking, and tears are making the screen blurry,” he wrote before sharing his story.
For five years, Dubai had been his home, his dream and his everything. But now, with his savings exhausted, he was set to return to India, with nothing but an empty pocket and a broken spirit.
He moved to Dubai in 2019 and dedicated himself fully to his job, skipping holidays, working overtime and regularly sending money back home. But all of it reportedly came to an abrupt end with one unexpected meeting.
He recounted how security escorted him out “like a criminal,” as five years of dedication vanished in minutes. After being abruptly fired last month without warning, citing company “restructuring”, he applied to hundreds of jobs, but nothing worked out.
With rising expenses and no income, he had no choice but to return home. He even pleaded with HR for more time, explaining he had rent to pay, but his request was denied.
“Dubai salary sounds big, but rent? DEWA? Grocery? School fee for sister back home? Petrol? All eating money like a monster,” he added in his post. To get by, he sold the few things he had: a mattress, a plant, and a small TV just to survive. “Feels like selling pieces of my life,” he also wrote.
To stay afloat, he sold the few belongings he had—a mattress, a plant, and a small TV—just to make ends meet. Letting go of those items, he said, felt like selling pieces of his own life.
Even though he was heartbroken, he didn’t hold anything against Dubai. His post reportedly felt more like a goodbye letter filled with love for the city. He wrote, “The smell of karak chai in the morning the crazy beautiful light show on Burj Khalifa, even the stress of Sheikh Zayed Road traffic jam! All gone.”
But what hurt him the most was the pain of returning home with nothing. As he put it, “Going back to the village with empty hands, shame is a heavy stone in my stomach.” He also shared that his father tried to stay positive during a phone call and told him, “Come beta, home is home,” but he could still hear the sadness and disappointment in his voice.
The post received support from people online.
A person encouraged him by saying, “You can start again, stronger than before,” reminding him that this isn’t the end.
Another shared their own experience: “It is not over. It’s just another chapter. I’ve left Dubai three times in 13 years, and every time, I came back stronger.”
An individual talked about how he once faced financial struggles too, saying, “I’m doing really well now, Alhamdulillah. Saving this post to keep myself grounded.”
Since the post went viral, the man hasn’t shared any updates. But one thing was clear: his painful story struck a chord with many people.
