Ivanka Trump reached Venice on Tuesday with her family for the wedding of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez. Ivanka was joined by her husband, Jared Kushner, and their three children. The family was boarding a water taxi in the Italian city. The wedding is expected to be one of the most high-profile events of the year.
According to TMZ, the Trump-Kushner family is likely staying at the luxurious Aman Venice hotel. This five-star hotel is located in a 16th-century palace on the Grand Canal. It also hosted the wedding of George and Amal Clooney in 2014.
However, there has been a major change in the wedding plans. The venue for the celebration has been moved due to security concerns and ongoing protests. Originally, Bezos and Sanchez had chosen a spot in Cannaregio, a lively and central area of Venice. However, concerns about possible demonstrations prompted them to seek a more secure location.
Protests have been taking place for weeks. Activists say that such a grand celebration will harm the city’s already fragile ecosystem. Venice has long struggled with the effects of overtourism.
Now, the wedding will happen in a hall at the Arsenale, a large 14th-century complex in the Castello district. This historic area was once used for building ships and storing weapons. Surrounded by water and only accessible when bridges are down, the Arsenale offers better security than the previous venue, the Scuola Grande della Misericordia.
Many celebrities are expected at the event. Besides Ivanka and Jared, the guest list likely includes Katy Perry, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and designer Diane von Fürstenberg. Perry once joined Sanchez on a Blue Origin space trip.
To host their guests, Bezos and Sanchez have booked five top hotels in Venice. These include the Aman Venice, the Gritti Palace, the St. Regis, the Belmond Cipriani, and Hotel Danieli. Most of these hotels have been either fully or partially reserved for the wedding.
The celebrations are set to be grand, but the couple is also trying to avoid attention and keep things safe amid growing criticism.
