The Labubu doll trend still seems far from being over. From taking over celebrity wardrobes to making their way among the youth, the dolls have received worldwide recognition and popularity in both the real and virtual world. At a time when Labubu has found a place almost everywhere, an incident shows them making it to a graduation ceremony.
A video going viral on social media shows two Chinese graduate students at China’s Tsinghua University. While the clip appears to be quite normal, looking straight out of a formal graduation ceremony with students gathering in proper gowns, one cannot help but notice the two students carrying their Labubu dolls dressed in similar graduation gowns and hats.
Shared by Phoenix TV English on Instagram, the clip shows the university faculty member handing over the graduation degree to the student, who arrived with their doll in one hand. Visibly amused by their arrival, the faculty member could be seen fixing the doll’s tassel before handing over the certificate and posing for a picture. In a similar instance, another female student also walked onto the stage with her doll, much to the amusement of the official.
“Congrats to you two!! At the graduation ceremony of Tsinghua University in China, two graduates brought their Labubu dressed in caps and gowns to participate in the turning of the tassel ceremony together,” the video’s caption read.
The video triggered divided reactions in the comment section. Many of the users seemed to be enjoying the viral trend of the Labubu dolls, while a few others stated that things had started going overboard. One wrote, “I love Labubus but it gets to a point,” while another added, “I thought this was so funny and cute lol people in this comment section need to stop taking life so seriously ALL the time.”
“This is so wholesome. I’m graduating this year and I’ll bring my labubu!!!” another comment read. Reacting to the faculty member’s reaction to the dolls, one commented, “Faculty passed the vibe check.”
Created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung, the quirky Labubu dolls, which started off as a character in the picture book, have now become a part of become part of Pop Mart’s blind box toy series. They have been going viral now, even making an appearance alongside celebrities like BLACKPINK’s Lisa, Rihanna, Dua Lipa and others.
