In a significant development impacting vehicle owners in Delhi, a new rule by the Delhi Government, effective from July 1, has forced residents to sell their older cars at drastically reduced prices. The regulation, aimed at curbing pollution, stipulates that diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years will not receive fuel. This directive follows an order by the Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM).
One such affected individual is Varun Vij, who had to sell his cherished Mercedes-Benz ML350, which he purchased for Rs 84 lakh in 2015, for just Rs 2.5 lakh. Vij, who resides in Delhi, described the emotional toll of parting with the car that held significant sentimental value for his family.
Despite being in excellent condition and having logged 1.35 lakh kilometres, the car had to be sold due to the new regulation, which left him with no other viable option.
Vij recounted the joy his family felt when they bought the luxury vehicle, recalling weekly trips to pick up his son from hostel—a journey that spanned 7 to 8 hours.

Vij shared that no one was willing to buy the car even for Rs 2.5 lakh, so out of compulsion and lack of options, he had to sell it—despite it having run only 1.35 lakh kilometers. He had hoped to get it renewed, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
Facing the inevitability of the new rule, Vij has now invested in a Rs 62 lakh electric vehicle, hoping to avoid similar constraints in the future. At present, his dream is to drive his car for at least 20 years—provided no new government policy comes into effect. He shared that he’s been receiving calls from many people who also own 10-year-old vehicles and are now looking to sell them.
