Relentless rainfall over the past few days has led to rapidly rising water levels in Madhya Pradesh’s Harda district, creating a dangerous situation for residents. A troubling video from the region has emerged, showing locals wading and riding through a dangerously overflowing river with no protective measures in place.
The visuals have sparked concern over the lack of safety infrastructure and official intervention, especially as the monsoon continues to batter parts of central India.
The video, shared by the new agency PTI, captures multiple alarming scenes. In one frame, a man on a motorbike rides through waist-high water as onlookers gather hesitantly on the riverbank.
Another clip shows pedestrians, including elderly individuals and children, cautiously walking across a submerged bridge. Despite the visibly strong currents, no barricades, life vests, or emergency personnel are seen in the vicinity.
A truck can also be seen attempting to cross the same waterlogged stretch, its tyres nearly submerged, highlighting the desperation of residents who rely on this path for daily commuting. As the water keeps rising, people have no choice but to cross on their own, putting their lives in danger.
“Madhya Pradesh: People seen crossing overflowing river without any safety measures in Harda, amid rising water levels due to continuous rainfall,” PTI wrote on X (formerly Twitter) while sharing the video.
The video, shared on June 28, has already been viewed over 3,000 times.
As per The Free Press Journal, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall in seven Madhya Pradesh districts on June 28, including Niwari, Tikamgarh, Khajuraho (Chhatarpur), Damoh, Katni, Shivpuri, and Panna. These areas could also experience lightning along with rain.
The IMD has advised people to stay indoors during bad weather and avoid going outside unless necessary. It’s important not to stand in open fields, under trees, or near electric poles during thunderstorms.
People should also avoid driving through flooded roads or low-lying areas, as they can be dangerous. Those living in areas with strong winds are encouraged to remove heavy or loose objects from rooftops to prevent accidents.
Lastly, the weather department has recommended keeping weather alerts turned on on phones to stay updated.
