There’s something eerily unsettling about mental hospitals. No, we are not talking about the cinematically aesthetic ones like Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island. It’s the real ones where peeling walls, echoing corridors, sterile lights and locked doors carry the heavy weight of silence. You get an inkling that there are a thousand untold and forgotten stories lingering in the air. Today, we are going to talk about one such asylum. The only thing is that the place is reportedly haunted. In entrepreneur-cum-storyteller-cum-Youtuber Divay Agarwal’s latest podcast, digital creator Aman Parkar told one such chilling tale about Pune’s Yerwada Mental Hospital.
Aman Parkar told the story of a reporter named Arjun, whose one-night stay at the mental hospital turned into a horrifying tragedy. He went to the hospital to work on an article and met a jailer there. Arjun informed the jailer that he needed to write an article about the place and hence needed to talk with a person who was not that seriously ill. The jailer then introduced him to a patient called Manoj and claimed that he would be released in a few days.
When Arjun asked Manoj to share an interesting anecdote about Yerwada Mental Hospital, the patient gave a creepy answer. He said, “Yahan pe apka jo sabse apne hoga wahi apko yahan pe dhoka dekr jaiga. Aap yahan pe kisi pe bhi bharosa nahi kar sakte. Aagr aap yahan pe ek raat rukoge, aapko pata chalega ki mei kis cheez ki baare mei baat kar raha hoon.”
Arjun stayed one night in the room with Manoj, hoping to witness something but nothing happened. The next morning, Arjun promised Manoj that he would meet him soon and went to the reception to retrieve his things. Manoj, however, warned the reporter that the very moment Arjun steps outside the facility, he would never return there.
At the reception, Arjun gave a Rs 100 note to the receptionist, telling the person to give it to Manoj since he had helped him a lot. To his shock and horror, Arjun then found out that the patients at the hospital had burned Manoj alive 20 years ago. As per the narrator Aman Parkar, Arjun was later admitted to the hospital as a patient.
Yerwada Mental Hospital in Pune is one of Asia’s largest and oldest psychiatric institutions. The facility has often sparked intrigue due to such scary stories.
