A scorching heatwave is gripping large parts of the United States, with temperatures soaring high enough to trigger serious health warnings. Authorities in several regions have advised people to limit outdoor exposure as conditions worsen. One particularly striking incident in New York City has gone viral, highlighting just how extreme the heat has become.
A woman took to TikTok after her purse strap melted into her T-shirt while she was out in the 99°F (37°C) heat. In the video, which has since spread to Reddit, she’s seen struggling to remove the strap, only to find it stuck to her shoulder. When she finally pulls it off, it leaves a charred black mark on her plain white shirt, almost as if it had burned into the fabric. The woman also shared a screenshot from her weather app, confirming the scorching temperature.
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “I’m in NYC. My AC has been on for the past 3 days straight.”
Another shared, “Yeah the heat is bad up there but this is also reason to buy quality products once instead of buying cheap shit and replacing it all the time.”
“My door weather stripping melted my door to my car during that heatwave,” a comment read.
An individual stated, “Rough way to find out your bag is a knockoff.”
Another mentioned, “The weather is messed up.”
One more added, “Jesus, I didn’t know New York was bad until recently.”
According to The Mirror USA, New York City has shattered a long-standing heat record. The city hit 99°F on June 24, surpassing the previous record of 96°F set back in 1888. But the sweltering temperatures didn’t stop there. Some areas near Central Park experienced even more extreme heat, with Newark soaring to a scorching 103°F and JFK Airport not far behind at 102°F.
